What happens in an Art Therapy session?
Check In - At the beginning of each art therapy session there is an open discussion about how the client has been since the previous session. This is a time to review any therapeutic goals and what the client wishes to address in this session. The client can also use the time to look back at the previous art-work, should they decide to add to it.
Art-making - This can take up the majority of the 45 minute session. This depends solely on the client, it can be brief or no art can be made and can be used as a verbal therapy session. This session can be directive or non directive. The beginning sessions a structure or a theme can be provided to prompt creative expression. Most sessions are non-directive allowing the client to explore what they need to. This time can be silent, the therapist simply witnessing the process or talkative depending on the client.
